10 Essential Sewing Tools Every Beginner Needs
Saturday, September 22nd, 2007New to sewing? Here’s a list of basic tools you’ll need to get started.
Sewing Machine
A basic model is fine, new or used. If it’s an older machine, just make sure it can sew a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch, that the stitch length and width are adjustable, and that it can sew in reverse.
For more on choosing a sewing machine, see Basic Tools Needed at SewingSupport.com.
Scissors
Look for scissors that are 8”-10” long, labeled “dressmaker’s shears” or “bent-handled scissors”. To keep your scissors sharp, use them just for sewing.
Straight Pins
Look for pins labeled thin, extra fine, or silk – they’re less likely to leave holes in your fabric. Also, look for pins that are 1 ½ to 2” long – you may find these longer pins easier to work with. Don’t use pins that are dull or damaged.
Hand Sewing Needles
You’ll likely be doing some sewing by hand (like sewing on a button). Keep an assortment of sizes on hand.
Sewing Machine Needles
Machine needles get dull with use and need to be replaced. And you’ll need to use a different type of needle for different fabrics and thread. Keep an assortment of sizes and types on hand.
Seam ripper
This will help you remove stitches when you need to.
Sewing Gauge
This is handy for taking smaller measurements.
Yard Stick
This is useful for taking longer measurements, such as a length of fabric.
Tape Measure
You’ll need this for taking body measurements.
Iron
Pressing is a necessary part of sewing, therefore you’ll need a steam iron with an adjustable temperature (and a sturdy ironing board to go with it).
Note: You’ll also need a flat cutting surface for laying out your fabric. You can use a tabletop or a clean, bare floor, as long as the surface can take abuse from pins and scissors. If not, then you’ll need a cutting board or a special cutting table.
