Keep Your Accessory Tray Clean

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Periodically clean the lint and dust from your sewing machine’s accessory tray. Lint that’s in the case can accumulate on your bobbins, pressure feet, etc. and end up inside of your sewing machine.

Use the Right Bobbin

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Remember that sewing machine bobbin types aren’t interchangeable. And using the wrong type of bobbin for your sewing machine can lead to stitch problems. Therefore, consult your sewing machine’s manual and always use the type of bobbin recommended.

Note: If you don’t have the manual for your sewing machine, try your sewing machine manufacturer’s website. They often have manuals available for download or purchase.

Help for More Accurate Stitching

For more accurate stitching and more comfortable sewing, position your sewing machine, if possible, so that you’re sitting right in front of the needle instead of off to the side, centered with your sewing machine.

Use a Raised Seam Guide

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

If you need help to sew accurate seams, try using a raised seam guide instead of the flat seam guide on your sewing machine. The edge of your fabric will butt up against the edge of a raised seam guide and therefore not shift easily out of place as it can with a flat seam guide.

You can make your own raised seam guide by wrapping a thick rubber band around the bed of your machine. Or you can layer several pieces of tape together, then adhere this to the bed of your machine.

Keep Your Thread from Breaking

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Burrs and nicks in your sewing machine’s needle plate hole (caused by the needle hitting the plate), can cause your thread to shred and break. Which can be exasperating when you’re in the middle of a sewing project.

Therefore, inspect your needle plate occasionally by removing it from your sewing machine and feeling around the edges of the needle hole. If you find any burrs or nicks, gently sand them away with an emery cloth or a piece of very fine sandpaper.
