Piece Interfacing

April 24th, 2008

If you find yourself without enough interfacing for a larger piece you need, feel free to piece smaller pieces of fusible interfacing together.

You can slightly overlap the edges of light to medium weight interfacing, but with heavier interfacing, butt the edges of the pieces together.

Keep Hems on Knits from Curling

April 23rd, 2008

To keep the hem on your knit garment from curling to the outside, try applying a strip of lightweight fusible knit interfacing to the bottom edge of your fabric before hemming (cut the strip the width of your hem and cut it on the cross-grain so it stretches). Then turn up the hem and stitch into place.

Read Through Your Pattern Instructions

April 21st, 2008

Read through your entire pattern instructions before you start to sew your project. This way, you can familiarize yourself with all of the steps involved, and you may even find that you can rearrange the order of the steps for greater efficiency.

Cut Everything Out at Once

April 18th, 2008

Cut out any needed interfacings and linings right after you’ve cut your pattern pieces from your fabric.

It’s temping to leave this until “later” — especially when you’re eager to start sewing your project. But you’ll save time in the long run because you’ll already have your cutting board set up and your cutting tools out. Plus it will save you the frustration of having to stop in the middle of your sewing to cut these items out as you need them.

Use a Different Thread for Basting

April 17th, 2008

Try using a different color thread – one that contrasts with your fabric – for any hand or machine basting you do. This will make the thread easier to see and therefore easier to remove later.
