So if you're a beginner who's never made a quilt before, you can make your first project go more smoothly and avoid frustrating mistakes by following a few simple tips:

Consider choosing a quilt design with larger fabric pieces, which will stitch up faster because it will require less sewing and piecing and will be more forgiving if your seam allowances happen to be a bit off. Also, choose a design with simple shapes like squares, rectangles, or strips because their seam lines will line up and match more easily than, say triangle or diamond shapes. But keep in mind that a simple design doesn't have to look plain. If you choose fabrics in a variety of small, medium, and large prints and a combination of light, medium, and dark colors, your quilt will have more visual interest and added depth.

Also, consider a choosing a smaller quilt design for your first project, perhaps a crib quilt, a throw, or even a wall hanging, all of which will stitch up faster than a much larger quilt and give you the satisfaction of a completed project more quickly.

And to speed things up, consider purchasing pre-cut fabric squares or strips for your quilt project (charm squares, jelly rolls, fat quarters, etc.). Not only will this save you cutting time, but you'll know for sure that your fabric pieces will be cut accurately.

And assuming you plan to launder your finished quilt, be sure to pre-wash your fabric before sewing your quilt. This can keep your finished quilt from puckering due to shrinkage and can help prevent fabrics from bleeding onto one another.
