Here you'll find a variety of dress styles from sleeveless sundresses to jumpers and pinafores, and even a baby kimono. Some of which have printable templates, and others have tutorials with instructions for simple fabric pieces you should be able to measure yourself.
So why take the time sew a baby dress when babies grow out of clothes so quickly? Because they're adorable. Because it can be a quick-to-make project. Because you can choose your own fabrics. And it can be a great way to repurpose adult clothing.
And sewing a baby dress, because of its size, can be a great way to use any larger pre-cut quilting fabrics you may have such as fat quarters and layer cakes. Plus, quilting fabric bundles are usually color coordinated, which means it'll be easy to mix and match prints if using several for your baby dress projects.
And one of the simpler, sleeveless styles would probably make a good project for a beginner. Plus, baby clothes, especially dresses, are often designed to fit loosely on the body, which means they'll be little to no fitting for you to do.
And for safety reasons, remember to avoid adding any long cords or drawstrings, long belts or sashes to baby or toddler clothing. And you may also want to avoid using buttons, small bows, or other embellishments that could come off and become a choking hazard. Consider using snaps or velcro as fasteners instead.
And of course, if you want to be able to launder your finished dress, just remember to pre-wash your fabrics (especially 100% cotton fabric) before sewing your dress to avoid shrinkage of your finished dress.
