Make a baby quilt today with this collection of over fifty free and easy baby quilt patterns gathered from all over the web! Whether you're new to quilting and are looking for an easy first project, or are an experienced quilter looking for a quick-to-sew project, you'll find a host of ideas and inspiration on these pages.
If you're a beginner, a baby quilt can make a great first project because of its smaller size, which will stitch up much faster than a larger quilt would. Plus, most of these quilt designs consist simple shapes which should be easy enough for a beginner to stitch together. And most of these designs consist of larger shapes, which will be more forgiving if you fail to achieve a precise quarter-inch seam allowance. And if you choose a design with squares, rectangles, or strips, your fabric pieces will be easier to handle than a design with triangles or diamonds which have stretchy bias edges, which can be tricky to deal with.
But a "simple" design doesn't have to mean boring. To give your quilt more visual interest, choose a variety of print fabrics for your quilt and/or sew your quilt from several contrasting fabrics (just make sure your fabrics are colorfast so the dark fabrics won't bleed all over the light fabrics when your quilt is washed).
And if you're looking for an even faster quilt to sew, consider a wholecloth quilt which doesn't require any patchwork piecing. Or consider making a so-called "cheater" quilt, which has a patchwork design pre-printed onto the fabric. There's no piecing required and all the seamstress has to do is sew along the pattern lines, giving the illusion of a pieced, patchwork design.
If you do choose a patchwork design for your baby quilt, consider purchasing pre-cut fabric squares or strips (charm squares, jelly roll strips, etc.). This will save you cutting time and will also ensure that your fabric pieces have been accurately cut.
