Here you'll find a selection of both simple and complex table runners to help you put all of those fat quarter fabric bundles in your stash to good use!

So, what exactly is a "fat quarter?" It's a piece of quilting fabric that measures 18 x 22 inches. In other words, a fat quarter is one yard of 44 inch wide fabric cut into quarters.

And what's great about most of these table runner projects is that they don't require you to cut your fat quarters into small squares or strips (you could simply use charm squares or jelly roll strips in that case). These projects leave your fat quarters mostly intact, letting the fabric take center stage, and allowing you to show off a lovely print, especially larger prints that might not look as nice if you had to cut them up.

And a table runner not only adds a beautiful, festive touch to your table, but it also adds a protective layer to your table. A table runner can also serve as a pad for hot dishes in lieu of trivets. And, of course sewing your own table runner means you get to choose your fabric and customize the runner to suit your needs, perhaps by resizing it to make it longer or shorter, wider or narrower.

There are several simpler designs on this page that would be great for someone new to quilting, especially because she'll be sewing with larger fabric pieces. And since a table runner is a smaller quilting project, if she decides that quilting isn't for her, she hasn't invested too much time, energy, or money in the project.

And of course, if you think you'll be laundering your finished table runner, consider prewashing your fabrics before constructing your runner. Some quilters think prewashing is necessary and others think it isn't necessary if you are using high quality quilting fabrics.
