Consider constructing your bag from a heavier fabric like a cotton canvas or denim. This way, you'll end up with a more durable finished bag that will likely last a long time. And when sewing a heavier fabric, just remember to use a thicker denim needle in your sewing machine, which will pierce through your heavier fabric more easily and without breaking.
If, however, you have your heart set on a lighter-weight fabric for your bag, try backing your fabric pieces with fusible interfacing for added strength or add a lining to the bag to make it extra durable (to add a lining, cut the same pieces from your lining fabric as your bag fabric and just sew the two layers together as if they're one piece).
And after you've sewn your bag and given it to its recipient, for safety reasons, just make sure to advise him or her against placing heavy items in the bag or too many items at once. A bag that's too heavy could cause the walker to become unstable and potentially tip over.
