30+ Modern Table Runner Patterns
So, what exactly defines a “modern” table runner? Well, there's no formal definition,
but just as with a modern quilt, a modern table runner often uses bold geometrics
in its design (for example, large rectangles, squares, circles, or hexagons) and its
design may also be minimalistic and/or use lots of negative space (lots of solid color
in the background). A modern table runner may also have a more traditional design,
but use bright, vibrant colors or more contemporary fabrics instead of traditional
florals.
And if you're new to quilting, one of the quilted table runners can make a great first
project for a beginner. Because a table runner is much smaller than a bed quilt, it
will stitch up fast and give the new quilter a quick feeling of accomplishment. Plus, a
table runner will be easier for a new quilter to handle and sew than a bed quilt. And
then if she decides that quilting isn't for her, she hasn't invested that much time in
the project or money in materials (or be left with a half-finished project).
And one of the patchwork designs can be a great way to use up fabric scraps you
may have leftover from other projects.
And if you want to be able to launder your finished table runner, consider pre-
washing your fabrics, especially if you're sewing a high contrast table runner with a
combination of very light and very dark fabrics. Pre-washing your fabric can help
prevent the colors in your finished runner from bleeding and can also help prevent
shrinkage.
