So, to really make the design of your star quilt “pop,” choose fabrics in a variety of
contrasting colors. And of course, any design that calls for using small fabric pieces
can be a great way to use up those fabric scraps you may have leftover from other
quilt projects.

And since a star quilt requires you to work with bias edges, which can be tricky
because they're prone to stretching, here are some tips you may find helpful:
Handle your fabric pieces as little as possible and try not to pull on your fabric as
you're sewing your seams. And you may want to treat your fabric with a spray
starch or sizing prior to cutting to help stabilize the fabric. And when pressing your
fabric pieces or blocks, use an up and down motion with your iron, rather than a
back and forth motion.

And if you've chosen a star quilt design that requires small fabric pieces, an
accurate quarter inch seam allowance is essential. To help you achieve this, you can
purchase a seam guide for your machine or you can use a magnetic strip or a piece
of masking tape as a guide. However, keep in mind that tape won't give you the
benefit of a raised ridge to place your fabric against.

And if you're a beginner who's new to quilting, a star quilt can be a good choice if
you choose a design made up of larger fabric pieces. This way, if your cutting or
seam allowances are slightly off, it won't be too noticeable in your finished quilt.
However, if you want to avoid having to deal with stretchy bias edges, a square or
rectangular quilt design may be a better choice.
